About Rachel's Ice Cream Bus AdventuresWhen my first born was a few months old, and I was a very young mother, I leased an ice cream truck from a company in Albuquerque called Mr. Frosty. I would strap my child's car seat to the freezer and we would cruise around together through the neighborhoods all day long selling ice cream to all of our little friends. My daughter Siera was two years old when we moved to Taos and lived up in Taos Canyon in a giant school bus, when my son Alijah was born and Siera started school, I decided to buy an old 4x4 Peņasco head start school bus and convert it into what would become the Taos Ice Cream Bus. Today we call this bus Emma and she is very much part of our lives having built her up piece by piece over the last 8 years. My daughter is now 15 and my son 10, and we have sold ice cream all over Taos County in the little bus, most of the early years were kind of a wash, we made and spent about the same amount of money every month, but it kept us afloat and more importantly, kept us together. I have obtained an official business license and food establishment permit and now you might see me selling in different locations in and around Taos. Such as Super Save parking lot, Gorge Bridge, Kit Carson Park, Taos Plaza, and local events such as biker rally, festivals, ball games, arts and crafts fairs, etc. I have milkshakes, variety of ice cream cones, fresh fruit smoothies, snow cone slushies, floats and malts. Keep an eye out for the upcoming special ice cream bus ice cream brands and espresso coffee! The newest addition to my ice cream bus fleet is a 1989 bluebird full sized diesel school bus, fully equipped with a roof rack for storing veggie oil. Click here for more info. My final goal is to be a completely self-sustaining mobile business with solar and wind power in the kitchen and hydrogen and bio fuel as a gas and diesel alternative. |
